My New Favorite Cookbook

I think I may have a new favorite cookbook. I love Aviva Goldfarb’s new cookbook, “SOS! The Six O'Clock Scramble to the Rescue: Earth-Friendly, Kid-Pleasing Dinners for Busy Families.”

The book is arranged seasonally with recipes containing produce ingredients you are likely to find at the particular time of year for each section. So far I have tried three of the Spring recipes (Chinese Lo Mein Noodles with Asparagus, p. 50, Orzo Salad with Peas and Feta Cheese, p. 52, and Pasta Primavera, p. 56.), and all have been a hit with my family. I have many, many more recipes earmarked to try. I can’t wait!

In addition to all the great quick and easy recipes, there are also lots of helpful tips and little articles throughout the book, like “how to keep fruits and veggies fresh and flavorful”, “ten tips to save money on your family food budget,” and “nine secrets to easy composting for scrambling families.” You will find this book to be a valuable resource for feeding your family.

I was fortunate to receive a free advance copy of this book from Aviva, and she has also generously offered to donate a copy to one of my readers for Mother’s Day. (By the way, be sure to check out the author’s son’s mother’s day poem for peace on page 31.) To enter to win your copy of “SOS! 1. 1. I am already signed up for one if not both of the newsletters.
    2. My biggest challenge - getting it done on time. Planning in advance (including the time that it should take to get X done) helps a lot. Case in point, I had been planning on baked meat balls all week & finally got around to cooking them last night. Luckily I started right away - becasue they took 1.25 hours to cook. If I had waited any longer - we would have been onto plan B...

  2. Hi there! I've actually been meaning to get in touch with you for some time now! I am a psychologist in Burlington, VT and I am working towards incorporating family meals, routines and rituals into my own practice. I am also originally from Rockland County! Anyway, it would be great to chat sometime. This cookbook looks great.
    1. Just signed up for both newsletters.
    2. Just added you to my 'likes' on Facebook
    3. The most important tip that we use in my home for family meals is 'include everyone, in some way.' It is just a principle value that we hold in the household. My two year old son really enjoys cutting up mushrooms with a butter knife - so we eat a lot of mushrooms these days! Also, have you heard of the Learning Tower? It's a brand name and I know that there are similar products out there, but it has been the best item for involving little ones in kitchen activities.

Hope to speak with you soon!

  3. 1. I am signed up to get both newsletters.
    2. My biggest challenge is planning ahead and having something ready that each can eat when they are ready for dinner. Between baseball, drivers Ed, etc...we don't sit down much together during the week and I find we're grabbing fast/drive thru too much yet I don't have good ideas for dinner that can stay on "warm" awhile and still be tasty!

  4. Hi!
    1. Already signed up for both newsletters.
    2. Just "liked" you on Facebook.
    3. My biggest challenge right now is that my oldest daughter has decided to become a vegetarian. The rest of us (4) are not. So, I need to make sure there is something on the table that is healthy and appropriate for my veggie daughter but that will still appeal to the carnivores.

  5. Cindy/Wisconsin-

My biggest success is a master menu plan similar to Ellyn Satter's in Secrets to Feeding a Healthy Family.

My biggest challenge is too many activities that interfere with dinner time!

We also have vegetarians and meat-eaters in our family. Build-your-own type meals have been received well. For example, tacos, fajitas, stir fries, pasta, sandwiches...we offer various toppings including varied protein choices.

My vegetarian daughter's tastes have expanded ours. She eats some interesting and tasty foods!

    3. And ditto to what all the others said... time, time, time. I always try to plan meals where some of the prep can be done earlier in the day...
Would love a copy of this cookbook!

I receive your Dinner together newsletter...

Hard to pick just one biggest challenge-meal planning (ahead helps w/ organization); needing to get dinner on the table quickly after work/pick up (involving the kids in prep and providing a snack helps); and reconciling living on a budget but wishing you could afford everything local/organic (doing your best, growing our own salad garden)...

    Would love this cookbook!
